Everyone’s asleep
except you.
You’re deafened by the roaring
of the earth hurtling through space
you have no choice
but to listen
to the cosmic background noise
your heart beating like an empty bass drum
you hear the tick of your internal clock
and then the train comes
in the middle of the night,
a long way away,
from the end of spacetime,
the loudest sound in the universe
scaring away all others
reminding you that
you are not alone in the dark
